It was a bottom of the table clash on Saturday as the Citizens welcomed fellow strugglers Washington to Hall Lane in a Northern League Division fixture. Despite both teams being in the bottom 3, it was the hosts who started the brighter and had the majority of chances in the first half. They deservedly took the lead on 13 Minutes from Debutant Lewis Herron. A corner from the left by Jay Nicholson to the far post found the head of Anthony Chapman who cushioned it back to Herron who catches it on the half turn and volleys into the back of the net despite the keeper getting a hand to it but he couldn’t keep it out 1-0. Within 2 Minutes, the visitors had the ball in the net from Lewis McGeouch but it was ruled out for offside. 23 Minutes in and the home side had a glorious chance to increase their lead. Smart work down the left by Jay Nicholson who pulls the ball back to Callum Banki who’s first touch takes it away from the defender and gets his shot away with venom but it is saved by the keepers trailing leg and cleared to safety. The chances kept on coming for the hosts and Anthony Chapman was the next one to get an effort away but he fires wide of the near post. 27 Minutes in and the away keeper gets away with a monumental error. He kicks the ball straight to Jack Young who takes a touch but the keeper redeems himself and saves with his legs. Despite the hosts dominance in the first half, the sucker punch came on 41 Minutes as the visitors equalised. A ball over the top of the defence looked easy for the keeper to deal with but he took a heavy touch and gave the ball to Dan Quine 30 yards out who swept the ball into an empty net 1-1 HT. Despite the hosts dominance in the first half, it was the visitors who dominated the second half with chance after chance. 65 Minutes in and they had a glorious chance to take the lead. A long ball upfield was headed into the path of Dan Quine who was through on goal with just the keeper to beat but the keeper stayed big and saved with his chest. 68 Minutes in and the visitors thought the y had the lead. A short pass back to the keeper by James Bryne allowed Lewis McGeouch to nip in and take it round the keeper but he stumbles getting his shot away and it is cleared off the line by Max Thomas. On 84 Minutes the visitors had another chance to snatch all 3 points. Peter Bryson gets caught on the ball on the edge of the area allowing Lewis McGeoch in on goal but the keeper stays big once again and saves with his chest 1-1 FT. A classic tale of a game of 2 halves with both teams having to settle for a point.
