Newcastle University 2 Durham City 3
By Jon McDowall
The Citizens travelled to Prudhoe FC on Saturday to take on league newcomers Newcastle University. They didn’t get off to the best of starts and after 5 Minutes they were behind. A cross from the right by Keith Douglas was met by the head of Timmy Browne and he powered his header beyond keeper David Smallman and into the net 1-0. City had a glorious to equalise on 11 Minutes as Anthony Chapmans shot across the 6 yard box was met by the outstretched leg of Joseph Whelan but from 2 yards out he contrived to find the keepers hands. However they weren’t to be denied and equaliser and 3 Minutes later they had it. A cross from the left by Joseph Whelan was fumbled by home keeper Alex Curran and was pounced upon by Joe Collins who turned and fired into the net from 6 yards 1-1. City’s defensive frailties were once again undone in the 34th Minute as a cross from the right found Timmy Browne at the far post unmarked and once again he powered a header beyond David Smallman and into the net 2-1. Right on the stroke of half time the visitors had their well deserved 2nd of the game and what a strike it was. Good work down the right by Famara Jatta found Demitri Kehi 20 yards out and he unleashed an unstoppable effort beyond the keeper nearly taking the net off 2-2 HT. On 53 Minutes Famara Jatta spotted the keeper off his line and from fully 40 yards tried an effort but the keeper just got back to smother the effort. Only a great save by keeper David Smallman on 57 Minutes prevented the hosts taking the lead as he tipped Liam Atkins downward header over the bar for a corner. On 64 Minutes the visitors had the lead for the first time in the game and it was goal of the game. Famara Jatta picked the ball up 25 yards out on the left and right footed he curled an effort into the top corner with the keeper no chance 2-3. Despite the home sides best efforts to get back into the game it was City who almost settled it right on 90 Minutes only for Anthony Chapmans free kick to rattle the crossbar and away to safety 2-3 FT. A great battling performance by the Citizens to claim their first goals and points of the season on a real hot summers day.
