Durham City 0 Willington 2
It was Tenants v Landlords on Saturday as City welcomed “Visitors” Willington to Hall Lane in the first game of the new Ebac Northern League 2nd Division. The visitors started brightly and almost took the lead on 10 Minutes. A quick free kick by Ruddy found an unmarked Gash at the far post with a free header but Keeper Richardson stayed big to keep it out. On 23 Minutes they came even closer. The same combination of Ruddy and Gash combined for Gash to shoot from 10 yards only to see his effort hit the crossbar, bounce on the goal line and cleared to safety. City were living dangerously and they succumbed to the opening goal on 35 Minutes. Thirlaway was caught in possession by Davis who slid the ball beyond the defence to Forster 1 on 1 with the keeper and he calmly side footed it past the oncoming keeper. City were aggrieved that the Referee did not award them a foul on what appeared to be a clear elbow on Thirlaway in the build up but the goal stood. 0-1. The visitors came close to doubling there lead on the stroke of half time. A ball over the top of the defence found Davis who lobbed the keeper from 25 yards only for the ball to bounce on the goal line and over the top of the crossbar for a goal kick. 0-1 HT. City came out fighting at the start of the second half and had a chance to equalise. Kehi beat the full back for pace down the left,, gets to the by-line but instead of pulling the ball back to the unmarked Young he decides to try and beat the keeper at his near post only to be saved by the keepers outstretched leg. On 60 Minutes City paid the price for falling to convert one of there chances as the visitors went 2 goals ahead. A neat 1 2 between Ruddy and Gash who found Ruddy in the area who tried to lob the keeper but he gets a hand to it and claws it away for a corner. From the resulting corner which was whipped in from the right by Wren Liam Lawlor rose the highest 8 yards out and powered a header into the net 0-2. By this time the visitors were firmly in control of the game and that was the end of the scoring. 0-2 FT. A disappointing start to the season for the Citizens but they have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday night away to Ryton & Crawcrook.
