A Q & A with chairman Gary Hutchinson
On Sunday, Club Chairman sat down and answered some very important questions about the club.
Here are his answers…
Q) Considering where Durham were when Olivier Took Over do you think he’s done a good job .
A) I believe if Olivier hadn’t took over the club would have folded
Q) But has he done a good job ?
A)The clubs still here answers the question could he have done better Yes but so could all the board members since he has been at the club some things were out of our control and yes we have made mistakes .
Q) Was it right to sack Adam Furness and Ian Skinner?
A) There were reasons but I do believe and know Olivier admitted even to them it was probably a rash decision a mistake and could of been handled better they are two great lads
Q) Going to Consett was it the right move ?
A) it was the only move we were treat well and after given notice at new Ferens park we only had days to make a move and Consett helped we tried to get closer but at time clubs couldn’t help
Q) Was Chris Moore right appointment At the time?
A)yes and we’re starting to build but crowds decreased and the budget had to be removed
Q) Why Willington?
A)Closer to Durham and once again down to cost
Q) Ollie Hotchkiss right move ?
A) He wanted to be given a go did well 10th in league but had a better offer from Washington on paper and decided to move on Ollies a great lad and wish him all the best
Q) Mickey Weston ?
A) Once again promise of players they came but results didn’t so needed change
Q) Billy and Steve were they right for club ?
A) At the time I would say yes unfortunatley results didn’t go there way either struggled in the end and was probably right decision they left for club and themselves
Q) Why Andy and Ross ?
A) Once again on paper they look good same vision great coaches and only time will tell
Q) How is the club financially?
A) Not good need our own ground as discussed thanks to Olivier sponsors and the supporters we keep going though
Q) Is it true you lose money at home games
A)Simple answer yes ground rent programmes referees cost more than we bring in during games yesterday programmes and referee still had to be paid for inspecting pitch
Q) Can you turn it around ?
A) Not by myself I need support from board volunteers sponsors and of course supporters but do believe we can still turn it around
Q) It must be disheartening to here clubs on massive budgets ?
A) Yes but we in a catch two situation we need a ground and a good team but we need income and to break even first .
I personally won’t put the club at anymore risk than what it is. I’m advertising for sponsors for people to buy programmes raffle tickets enter the Super Six Letter Draw buy half time raffle tickets come to events and of course games because every penny helps
Q) What is the relationship like with the reserves ?
A)The reserves have had a few managers over the years and it has been difficult but I believe Cameron and Kallum are doing a great job and have strengthened the squad .I hope like a few years ago for Ollie Hotchkiss that we can bring players through on a regular basis because I know players want to win leagues and managers to but the priority is to bring lads through the teams.
Q)That been the case what is the relationship like with the youth ?
A)To be truthful not as good as it should be on both sides we have asked players to come to the reserves and for whatever reason they haven’t we have asked for them to be ball boys/girls and come to our nights events but it doesn’t happen even to games where they get in free but saying that our HOME ground would be key so managers can interact more and until then I think there will always be a divide so to speak . We have numerous youth teams wanting to join but it’s just not right for both .
Q)You say teams want to join up and we heard you would like a under 23 under 18 teams can they not do what the reserves do for now and play at there own ground ?
A) Certainly and we would help especially bringing players in but at the moment you need people to run those teams on and off the field and of course have their own ground so ideally at the moment it probably should be a team already set up and maybe struggling a little bit for say players but yes we would love to have the youth teams on board
Thanks to Gaz for those answers and we think you can tell he was very truthful in his answers .
