Durham City AFC Reserves defeated fellow Wearside league 2 side Jarrow FC Reserves to earn their place in the Quarter final of the Clem Smith Bowl.
Another slow start for the reserves as they found themselves down to two goals to nil in the opening 3 minutes. A fantastic finish from the Jarrow Centre forward and then a rebounded effort seen them not only take the lead but double it in a matter of minutes.
However, the reserves bounced back in style thanks to a goal from Midfielder Dan Simpson who rifled the ball past the keeper high into the top right corner.
After a slow start, Durham City were right back at it and putting the pressure on Jarrow causing a mix up of communication between their Centre back and goalkeeper which caused the ball to be flicked home for a own goal.
2-2 and 20 minutes played.
The reserve dominated much of the ball and caused problem after problem. Debutant Mitchel Simons coming close with a long rage effort smashing the crossbar and down towards to goal line. The ball was deemed to have not crossed the line from referee Billy Burrell.
Jarrow, after already gifting Durham with a goal, we’re at it again after their Centre Back sliced the ball into the net from 5 yards after a smartly worked corner from the citizens. 3-2 and the reserves in the lead!
Durham controlled the pace of the game and tried to work their way back at Jarrow. However, was nearly pegged back after a smartly worked move down the left seen the reds smash the effort just wide of the target. A let off.
The more the game went on the more the reserves relaxed and really began playing. However, constant fouls never really let the game run and gather some pace.
A easy role out from goalkeeper Aidan Mutch. 23 passes later seen the reserves in on goal as winger and captain Alex Gudgeon smashes home a half volley only to be chalked off for a suspected handball.
This didn’t put off the reserves as 3 minutes later they had the ball in the back of the net again only for this time for it to stand. A wonderful cross from Dan Simpson seen Mitchell Simons with the slightest of touches guiding the ball home for his first goal for the club.
The referee shortly blew for half time after a chaotic half of the game. 4-2.
1 change at the break for the reserves, on came Calvin Payne for Centre Back Jude Rupiny . Reserves switching to two up top.
Reserves we’re back at it and nearly scored from the off. A smart move down the left seen a floated ball over top only for a fantastic save to deny centre forward Robbie Middlebrook.
The game turned scrappy, due to the constant fouls given away.After a altercation in the reserve penalty area seen jarrow awarded a bizarre penalty. Which was cooly converted from the jarrow centre forward. 4-3.
2 changes shortly after the goal seen Dan Simpson and Mitchel Simons make way for Dan Hunter and Mathew Arnell.
Although the scoreline was close the game was almost dead and buried with the reserves taking care of the ball moving from side to side.
A few chances fell to centre forwards Calvin Payne and Robbie Middlebrook. Again smartly denied by the Jarrow keeper on several occasions.
This time the keeper had absolutely no chance as Captain Alex Gudgeon turns home a free kick from 30 yards straight into the top corner!
5-3 and the game almost dead and buried.
Entering the final 10 minutes seen 2 more changes for the reserves as on came Mounir Bousiri for his debut and Midfielder Jack Swansbury.
The reserves Killed off the last 10 minutes off the game and dominated possession. The ref blew and it finished 5-3 to the Citizens Reserves.
