Mitchel Simons has joined Cameron Thompson’s back room staff as a coach.
The 18 year old, who has been playing for the reserves this season accepted Thomson’s offer earlier this week after recently finding a love for the coaching side of the game.
“ After speaking with Cameron about the opportunities available joining the coaching staff was a no brainier, I’ve always wanted to get into coaching and now with the help of Newton Aycliffe Youth FC and Durham City I’m being able to do that, with Durham.
I’m being given the opportunity to be a player/coach and that is ideal for me. This season I have suffered 2 bad injuries.
One at the start of pre season and then again only 4 games back in. This means I require an operation In March. Being a coach, it gives me a huge opportunity to pass on my knowledge and benefit my team from the sideline.
The way the teams ran is completely professional and there is no better club to be starting my journey in coaching along side Cameron and the other Coaches.
I’ve been given the chance to also lend a big help in hand with the running of Durham City’s U17 side which will hopefully help improve the link between the reserves and the younger groups as feeder squads in the near future.
I’m over the moon to be part of it all going forward and the hard work for the second half of the season has already begun for the Reserves and the Under 17s “
Reserve manager Thompson added
“Mitch has been a massive character around the dressing room and on the pitch over the course of this season. He has the respect of the players, the staff and volunteers and the way he conducts himself is what I want in my coaches.
Mitchell, having been involved in Sunderland Academy and Also in northern league clubs such as Aycliffe. Can add something different to our set up and pass on his experiences to make it even better for our team”
Mitchell has joined up with 1 other coach in Alex Haswell, Goalkeeper Coach Sam Bell and Assistant Manager Kallum Warne.
Up next for the reserves, they face a visit to Sunderland West End Reserves for their first game in 2020.
